In the Spanish language, the word Seña is rich with nuance and meaning. It implies a distinguishing mark or personal signature. Born in 1995, Seña is the first icon wine from Chile.
During his first visit to Chile in 1990, Robert Mondavi recognized the great potential for producing fine wine in our country. During his visit he met Eduardo Chadwick, whose winery, Viña Errázuriz, was founded in 1870 and has been producing quality Chilean wines since then. They discovered that they share a passion for wine and a philosophy of striving for winemaking excellence, and they thus formed a partnership for the production of Seña in 1995 the first icon wine from Chile.
Seña began as a symbol of the vision of these two winemaking families, and the fulfilment of their shared dream to realize the potential of the Chilean wine country by creating a truly world class wine.
Mondavi and Errázuriz teams search for Seña’s ideal terroir lasted four years and in September of 1999, the hillside vineyard was acquired. This unique property is located in the Ocoa District, at the western end of the Aconcagua Valley, 41km from the Pacific Ocean.
Seña Hillside Vineyard has 45 planted hectares of hillside vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenère and Malbec. The vineyard is managed following the biodynamic principles. Led by Eduardo Chadwick, a talented team of viticulturists and winemakers is responsible for the development of Seña under biodynamic farming.
Eduardo Chadwick has been researching and studying biodynamic viticulture, and he is now convinced that this is the ultimate vineyard farming method to obtain the real expression of the soil in their wines. In his words: ‘I want Seña to be a unique terroir wine that tastes of where it is grown, and I am convinced that moving into biodynamic viticulture will get us there’.
The Seña team is leaded by Eduardo Chadwick with Jorge Figueroa as viticulturist and Francisco Baettig as winemaker.
