Mahi which means "our work, our craft" was established in 2001 and represents the fulfilment of a dream for Brian Bicknell and his wife Nicola. Brian has an exceptional pedigree both in New Zealand and internationally and established his reputation as winemaker for Seresin domestically and Errazuriz in Chile. Conscious that Marlborough was in danger of losing its identity, Brian's vision for Mahi was to highlight the individuality of particular vineyard sites rather than conforming to the regional stereotype. This approach has led to a strong following amongst journalists, wine buyers and consumers alike. In 2006 Mahi moved to its current winery, where they introduced a Marlborough series while continuing to explore the exciting possibilities presented by specific vineyards and growers. The focus remains on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Mahi symbol represents the strength, life and growth of the native New Zealand frond (fern), with the understanding that wine should never be rushed to bottle, respecting its ability to evolve naturally over time.
