The Colutta Farm "Bandut" is named after an ancient piece of land bought by Antonio Colutta in the early 1900's, which now belongs to Giorgio. He produces wines in his vineyards in the 'cru' of Buttrio, Manzano and Rosazzo, which belong to the prestigious "Parco della vite e del vino" (Vine and wine park) in the Colli Orientali del Friuli. The vineyard itself extends over 18-hectares and reorganisation and renovation of the vineyards has started, and the vine number has increased to 5,000/6,000 vines per hectare, depending on the different soils and varieties ensuring continuing quality fruit and better evaluation of the vines optimum site.
When Giorgio set up his own cantina in 2000 it was on the back of 25 years of experience as a wine maker and vine grower. He is a man of enormous charm and modesty whose aim is to produce wines that represent the Collio Orientali soil he has in the best way he can. It is hi passion and vocation and as a result the wines he produces are honest and show integrity that instantly appeals, capturing the essence of both his terroir and uncompromising cellar husbandry.
Colutta are about to obtain the ISO 9001 Certification to guarantee the 'Full Quality of Product and Service', from the land to the customer.
A full but scented nose of peach and rose petal, followed by a soft, gently assertive palate with balanced acidity and solid structure. This is a wine for drinking now and to be enjoyed with food.
Lively aromas of fresh mint, gooseberry and nettle that positively dance out of the glass, and a palate to match; lively zesty and full of mouth watering acidity. This is classic Friulian Sauvignon showing real class.
It is (at time of print) illegal to call this variety by the name above but as they don't seem to have settled on a name as yet we will continue in the past vein. This is a real benchmark wine, wafts of rounded fruit, marshmallow (the proper stuff, not the confection) studded with rose and exotic spice are all classic Tocai. The voluminous palate is both rich and elegant, having integrated acidity that holds all the richness nicely together.
This is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Cabernet Franc, two varieties that work well in friuli due to the soil and the extensive clonal selection of the vines (the varieties have been in Friuli since Napoleonic times). This shows capsicum, blueberry, fresh cassis and cedar wood on the nose and a delicious sweet and savoury palate, a broad tannic structure and crisp mouth watering acidity. A small part of the wine has been aged in old oak casks.
