When Giorgio Rivetti wanted to purchase Ezio Cocito's newly inherited vineyard and add it to his already fabulous stable of 'crus', the winemaker was met by a resounding 'no way' by his friend, even though Ezio is a plumber by trade and has no knowledge of winemaking. So Giorgio made an agreement that he would make the wine and Ezio could look after the vineyard, which, fortunately has turned out to be a very happy coexistence.
The vineyard, located in Nieve 900 feet above sea level and facing south by south west, is famed for always receiving a bit of sunshine, even when the skies are bruised. Once the fruit is harvested it is then taken to Giorgio's new Barolo estate 'Campe' in Grinzane Cavour and treated in the same way his other Barbaresco wines.
This is the first vintage of this wine, and what a vintage to start with. The wine is fermented in roto-fermentors for 8 days, then transferred to new French oak for Malolactic fermentation and aged for a further 22 months in new French oak. The wine is bottled after 3 months in stainless steel and held for 12 months before release. 4000 bottles were made.
Rose petals leather and tar wing their way to the senses, with the complex spice and soft summer fruit emerging to give a generous mouthfeel and classic Barberesco elegance. Ready to drink now, but capable of 5-10 years to develop further.
