La Brancaia

La Brancaia, encompassing the two estates Brancaia and Poppi, has been owned by the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer since 1981. It is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area and saw a vertical take-off when it's vintage 1983 wine won first place at a major Chianti Classico tasting. Since then, through uncompromising dedication to quality and a strong own identity, the continuous recognition of BRANCAIA was built up - spearheaded by the estates top-wine Brancaia IL BLU, being already a classic for many wine lovers all over the world.

The wines come from a state-of-the-art cellar. The estate is managed by the oenologist and daughter of the owners, Barbara Kronenberg-Widmer, together with her husband Martin Kronenberg. They enjoy consulting support by the brilliant oenologist Dr. Carlo Ferrini. La Brancaia is one of Tuscany's top wine-growing estates, winning national and international awards every year. Its wines are sold - and bought - all over the world.

2005 Tre, IGT Toscana

Tre’s success lies in the careful selection of the fruit in the vineyard. The wine is a blend of Sangiovese (80%) Merlot (10%) and Cabernet (10%) sourced from the estate’s three main vineyard sites in Chianti and Maremma. The blend is then aged for 12 months in second year French oak. The joy of the wine is that it represents a fantastic introduction to the often complex world of Tuscan wines, especially the famed ‘Super-Tuscan’ genre, and a great insight into what Brancaia offer in the range as a whole.

2004 Chianti Classico, DOCG

Brancaia make only one Chianti. Any fruit therefore not up to the exacting standard of this wine go into the Tre or get discarded completely. The depth and complexity of this vintage are a thankful relief after the difficult 2002 vintage, showing mature complexity and extraordinary elegance and character.

2004 Il Blu, IGT Toscana

The wine that built the estate, and this vintage is, in Barbara’s opinion one of her best. Il Blu is made using Sangiovese from their vineyard in Castellina and a hint of Merlot, and aged in French oak for 12 months. The complexity and depth of the wine reflect both the vineyard and the winemaking skills of those who crafted it. This wine has been placed on the 9th position in the Wine Spectators top 100 wines 2007.
